Pity is a hidden counter that guarantees a 5★ after a set number of pulls. In Zenless Zone Zero, the base rate is 0.6%, soft pity starts at pull 74 (+6% per pull), and hard pity at pull 90 is a guaranteed 5★. The counter resets the moment you pull a 5★.

Soft pity is the range of pulls (74 to 89) where your 5★ rate rises by 6% every pull instead of staying flat at 0.6%. This is why most 5★ characters drop in the 74-90 range rather than at the hard pity cap.

Hard pity is pull 90: a 100% guaranteed 5★. You can never go more than 90 pulls without a 5★ on a character banner. Budget planners should always assume 90 pulls per 5★ as the worst case.

Every 5★ you pull has a 50% chance to be the featured character. If you lose the 50/50, your next 5★ is guaranteed to be the featured one — and this guarantee carries over to the next banner of the same type.

Yes. Your pity counter and your 50/50 guarantee status both carry over between banners of the same type. Nothing resets when a banner ends — but pity never transfers between character and weapon banners.

To guarantee a specific featured character from zero pity you need up to 180 pulls: 90 to hit your first 5★, then up to 90 more if you lose the 50/50. In practice, most players spend between 90 and 144 pulls thanks to soft pity.

One pull costs 160 polychrome. A full hard pity cycle is 14,400 polychrome, and a guaranteed featured character (180 pulls) costs 28,800 polychrome at worst.

Including soft pity, the average is about 50 pulls per 5★ over many pulls (the median is even lower). However, for planning a specific banner you should use the worst case (90) and be pleasantly surprised by anything better.
